Doug Spencer – Gang and drug Education

My name is Doug Spencer, and I am a member of Odd Squad Productions Society. Odd Squad is a charitable organization comprised of serving and retired police officers and is recognized as an international leader in the field of drug and gang education for youth. Odd Squad ascribes to the notion that ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure’, and that drug prevention and education programs are much more effective and healthy investments for our youth than treatment.

I have recently retired after 40 years in policing, having spent the majority of my career working as a Gang Investigator and Youth Squad Officer. I am the only recognized Gang Expert in the Supreme Court of British Columbia, and in 2018 received the Governor General’s Award for Meritorious Service for my work with Odd Squad. In my 12 years as a member of Odd Squad, I have delivered over 370 presentations to nearly 38,000 elementary and high school students across BC, Yukon, and the Northwest Territories outlining the truth about gangs, drugs, and the life-changing choices that all adolescents face.

My presentations are gritty, real, and interactive. I don’t just tell kids to say no, but educate them about the truth – about gangs, drugs, vaping, and peer pressure - so they are able to come to that conclusion on their own. The talks are appropriate for students from grades 5-12, and can be adapted for time, topic, and audience. The feedback about the presentations are overwhelmingly positive, from staff and students alike:

“The Delta School District is grateful for the support that Odd Squad Productions has provided to us over the past several years. Doug and his team have tailored presentations on Anti-drug and gang lifestyle presentations to our Secondary School Students and have had a huge impact year over year. Most recently, working with our School Liaison Officers from the Delta Police, all Delta Secondary School Students have had the 3 Part Series on Fentanyl presented to them. Student feedback has been very positive and the series clearly sustained discussions at the school and classroom level long after the presentations were over. Odd Squad Productions are first class resources that provide timely and age appropriate information that fits perfectly within our School District's Prevention Framework. Their services come with our highest recommendation.”

“I don’t know if you remember me or not, but I owe my life to you sir. I was getting involved with the wrong people and you showed me some things that changed my perspective on my life at the time. You also helped me get back to school… and helped me get in touch with a social worker. The things that you did for me have shaped my life into what it is now, and I just wanted to reach out and say how grateful I am for that.”

“I plan to go to UBC. I want to study pediatric and adolescent psychology and addiction. It was people like you who have inspired me to help others; and I deeply appreciated that you take the time to educate. Without this kind of vital education, I could have made the wrong choice.”
